    It’s because of the references
How John recommends him to the boss. The boss gives him one command with little to no explanation.
Their conversation shows that this is going to have a lot of biblical significance. Which shows John could be referencing to John the apostle. And also in the beginning, Dennis saw the cliff and said it looked like the end of the world. Which is hell
Moreover sheep and lamb mean purity and innocence as well as representing God’s people/followers.
The devil wants to corrupt that.
And Dennis is clearly being tested. He is given a timeline and just one command.

However, the devil takes advantage of his boredom to make his way in.
Where he comes from makes no sense too. Over the cliff?
And he says things that alludes he’s the devil. For example, he takes a jab at Dennis assuming that his relationship with his dad is bad. Because Dennis is breaking the one command given to him.
Dennis also says that it felt like heaven was watching him. Or god. I forgot . But he was looking at the starry night.

And then Todd says when they have sex that it’s good for him if it’s good for Dennis because Dennis liking it makes him corrupted.
And when the consummate this unholy union a deer dies. By the pond.
Deer are like lamb. And in the Bible there is a reference to psalm 42:1 whose verse basically about longing for God. Being spiritually thirsty.
But obviously, having sex with him cuts that tie between him and god.
There’s other things too like Todd coming in with an injured legZ
The injured leg thing is used in other media to signify or allude to the devil.

Anyhow that’s just a some of the things among a lot that support the interpretation of Todd is the devil

u make a point. but for me, the story is literal, but has an allegory/deeper meaning. Todd is a human in the story, but represents the devil. ykwim?

You make a point. they Could all just symbolize these things. Just another story about people.
Gives a lot to think about self willed desired and the consequences of it.
Perhaps the devil is just manifesting that and the command is just principles or guidelines we humans make up for ourselves to live moral lives
