I think, and that's only my humble conclusion, that by showing the ml questioning "what would I do" is to show he's actually thinking about everything he heard, thinking deeply about the whole story, and maybe trying to find inside himself if he's capable of forgive him from abandoning his mom, idk, that's what it looks like to me, cuz when we have this kind of complicated situation, we usually try to put ourselves in the other person's shoes

I dont blame him for his choice though. They were both extremely unlucky in this life. For him to get back his memories just now after she passed is heartbreaking.
