i wanna scream oh god this is back, but i've kinda forgotten this one. Is there a kindhearted samaritan who can do a quick summary of S1?

MC was a high class guide and somewhat of a war hero, except he was ageing, injured, and was about to retire until he guided an 18yr old S-rank esper on the brink of crashing out. Because he was compatible, management delayed his retirement to his absolute fury. Now stuck with this kid, years go by as the bloke's guide and they grow closer over time. Management start making some weird decisions, and not giving them all the information for their missions, and it ends up killing the MC. MC then wakes up suddenly in someone else's body (a low ranked guide with the same name as him) and doesn't catch on for an entire day that he's someone else until he encountered his old partner (the S-rank) who looks at him in disdain.

Anyway, he explains everything to his old doctor who ends up believing him, and the MC decides to keep his reincarnation low-key and live his life in his new body. However, more unusual management decisions happen and the MC finds himself in the S-rank's path again and again. MC learns S-rank was having problems being guided in the present day because he'd one-sidedly imprinted onto him in the past, and that's when we realise the bond was deeper than MC ever explained it. As they encounter one another more, the S-rank starts acting more mellow and more suspicious as the MC keeps name dropping restaurants that had already closed years ago, and knows a lot about the S-rank's salary and other inner corporation goings on (It's pretty clear the S-rank started recognising the MC as the MC). They get sent on a mission together where the S-ranks has to burn dozens of fleshy clones of the MC (wtf management), and it's obvious management either want the S-rank dead or heavily controlled through trauma. It also resolidifies why MC can't tell him the truth, since management have tried to manipulate the S-rank using his clones over years, S-rank might suspect the MC as another trick if he reveals his true self. (Doesn't matter, S-rank is highly sus of the truth anyway).

We left off after a training exercise went wrong (sus) and the two got out of it alive, only to be told 'hehe whoops' by management.
