You are imagining memory work as easier than it is. I work with patients suffering memory loss and its extremely hard, even when they still have living and involved family. With beoms dad we dont even know if he had any involved relatives and im sure you know of the problems with the american health system etc. Anyways, yes, 30 years is still extreme.
