Um if you don't remember Semin wasn't the one who followed John into the classes. Besides how is he going to ignore a classmate and one with whom he's collaborating on a project? PLUS if you also don't remember he's already decided that he doesn't want to get too close to him.
Another thing you don't seem to have actually read either is how Semin is the only one who doesn't get what he wants, how his mother is ONLY strict with him and his brother is basically allowed to do whatever he wants. You SAY that being poor shouldn't affect how nice you are to people, however, but then claim it should affect how you find happiness. Double standard much?

I admit semin's family situation isn't the best and we don't know the full story (his strict(?) mom, his brother) and he says they're "just clothes" but I have a sense it's the clothes that "John" owns. Like, I would be mad too if we were struggling and my kid spent money that could be used for necessities on expensive name brand clothing (I only guess he did it back then bc he's doing it now as well). Different things bring us different happines. being poor, tho, doesn't have to affect how nice you are to people...
