Romance or not, I feel instantly tired when given a cheerful protagonist and the negative, uninterested and/or jaded rival/teamate/love interest.
But the exception is so, so good; when the cheerful one experiences something that causes them to stop being cheerful, and now the usually negative one wants to help them and has to try and be positive for their sake.

I don't know how to describe it but I like characters like the uke from "Part time freelancer" hes super cheerful and genuinely kind but he isn't stupid. Theres a scene where the seme thinks the uke will send his friend home, so he can stay over but.the uke tells him to leave and it actually shocks the seme it was so funny.
