Yk a lot of them came from BL Anthologies published by the one and only Mr.BLue, they like to put collections of short stories from diff artists together and almost all of them got 1 or 2 step bro fics in there. But the thing about mmg uploaders is that instead of uploading the work as a anthology, they like to upload each work in the anthology separately so thats why it seems like there's so many of them.

The trope being a taboo surely is a factor. Of course we all know it's a taboo, that's why we keep it strictly in fiction. It's the same logic of how some people can condone or like reading dead dove fics on AO3.

It's the same thing as liking the beast x human trope, we like the scenario of it happening only in fiction and it not harming anyone IRL. People find taboo things hot all the time while knowing it's morally grey/straight up wrong sometimes. Call it guilty pleasure.

And as for why specifically step-siblings, it's because while being intimate with siblings is straight up morally dark, knowing that they're not blood-related reduces the severity of the scenario.

Mentioning blood relations bc in straight relationships, blood-related relationships are especially forbidden due to the biological aspect of birthing genetically defect children and these couples being step-siblings would negate that issue. In same-sex relationships, it just stems from the moral aspect unless it's in a setting where everyone can get pregnant. So that's additional thoughts on the taboo stuff that I can elaborate on.
