What I understand is that the only thing preventing Ian from ending with TJ is the gangster stuff. TJ can't (or don't want to because he's convinced he belongs to this life) leave this life but can't let Ian go either. Ian would like to start another life with TJ, but since it is not possible at the moment, he sees something in Joseph that TJ can't give him. I don't think Ian loves Jo (although Jo is obviously important to him !) : I think Ian loves what Jo can give him (starting a new life), that TJ can't. If TJ could give him that, ofc it's my opinion, but I definitely think there would be no question : he would choose TJ.
That doesn't change the fact that Ian's (probably) deeply attached to Jo. And I really think Jo is amazing, I won't way he's boring as others said in the comment section. He's sincere and lovely. But if Ian is honest with himself, he can only either end up with TJ or end up alone. I feel like Jo would only be a second choice, to replace what he couldn’t have with TJ.
That's why I really hope TJ will be endgame, because even if it's "toxic" or not "sane" (and I hear that), this would be the truest conclusion to Ian's feelings.
