I think it's actually quite a realistic illustration of a hetero polygamy historically and still in some nations today. Particularly in royal relationships, the fault is *always* with the gender giving birth and they are blamed as 'defective'.
There's no way historically the queen/royal consort/empress would've been allowed to have their own consort in a 'traditional' monarchy.
Why? Because ultimately the key is always keeping the royal bloodline 'pure'. The risk of the queen/royal consort/empress getting pregnant by another was simply too high.
Plus the emperor/king is only having sex with the consort for the sake of the monarchy. NOT because they enjoy it!
