novel Jiran (ML) is actually a kind emperor and yes he cherishes his empress and his concubines equally (until he falls in love with one of them—hwawoon the MC). I think the OG hwawoon could have been a favored concubine if his personality wasnt trash. He wanted to have the emperor all to himself which is not possible bc hes the emperor, the father of their nation.
Personally, and I know some might disagree, but I think instead of soul swapping I think it would have been better if OG hwawoon just regressed and then changed to be better. He genuinely loved the emperor it’s just that he’s too greedy for his attention and didn’t want to share him with the others. There are also moments in the novel that they highlights hwawoon’s beauty and it always captivated the emperor like the OG hwawoon just needed to change his trashy personalities
While reading the novel I like to think or theorize that OG hwawoon jump on that pond not because he wants the emperor's attention but to end his life. Throughout hawoon living in hwawoon's body he frequently has these nightmares about the OG hwawoon's past actions. I am not justifying OG hwawoon's violent acts but later on the story my theory got debunked and I hate how they evilize OG hwawoon. They didn't even address the fact that he pass and no one knows except hawoon and the emperor himself.
oh my we’re the same! Im glad Im not the only one who thinks regression is much better and Im also having conflicted feelings for the guard and emperor. Idk, aside from regression, I think transmigration is also better than soul swapping (the MC getting isekai-ed into this novel). Personally, as long as they dont share the same timeline and universe Im okay with different body possession, but if it happens to be in the same timeline/universe then at least I want the ML to have an emotional connection with the MC (similar to At The End Of The Road manhwa). But the emperor doesnt personally know the mc (hawoon the guard) and the one he knows in a personal and intimate level is OG Hwawoon. Thats why Im having conflicted feelings. I feel like anyone kind-hearted and devoted to the emperor could possess hwawoon’s body and the emperor will be smitten nonetheless
**spoiler thou***
The emperor eventually learned that hwawoon is not the OG hwawoon by the end of the main story. He felt bad for what happened to OG hwawoon but what matters to him is he still have this “hwawoon” by his side who is much kinder and loves him the right way (not the obsessed type and who understands his role as an emperor)
No it’s okay. I also read the novel and I have similar thoughts as well. I also feel like OG hwawoon wanted to end his life back then, not bc he wanted the emperor’s attention (esp how he trashed so much and pushed hawoon away when he tried to save him). Also when Hawoon the guard in a dreamlike state realised that OG hwawoon hated to be in jeongan palace bc it was built to honor the male concubine of the previous emperor whom he dearly loved). It also left a bitter taste in my mouth that they villainized OG hwawoon so much (and yes, it doesnt mean we excuse all the evil things he did bc we dont, but his character is so interesting to me and I find him pathetic for how much hes in loved with the emperor)
Yesssss!! I am just hoping to see a deeper connection between the emperor and the guard which so far hasn’t been mentioned in the Manhua and according to what you have said, not much in the novel as well.
Also loveee At The End of The Street (soul-swapping) and To Be or Not To Be (Transmigration)
And thank you for your detailed explanations na ヾ(❀╹◡╹)ノ~

I am in dilemma. Normally in soul-transfer type of stories, the ML normally hated the MC completely or have some grudges at least. Here it seems like the ML had fondness towards the original concubine and waiting for him to change @.@ Idk it just makes me think.. I haven’t read the novel so I cannot really tell as well. I will just continue reading and see. Anyhow, I love the art style so much
