I also thing it was a jolt of realization that Jonak's situation wasn't any different from the boy. He was desperate to save his childhood sweetheart and Aidan took advantage of that. Much like the boy was desperate and excused the act as a transaction for benefits. Ugly ugly truths but the bleakness of the similarity probably horrified Aidan.

hmmmm that chapter when Jonak told Aidan about the boy who was being raped by the priest and he imagined Jonak as a little boy has so many deep meanings to it:
he saw his story relating to jonaks
he was ashamed of himself in a sense
bro remembered the 58850384 year age gap(nah not rlly)
but I was a bit confused before I thought about it as to why he would think of that and why he stopped sharing a bed and if they just didnt do anything intimate for years after.
