and i get that but it’s chapter 33 i feel like with the way the story is that the copious amounts of smut should be closer to the end of the story

No. In this story it’s necessary to have this mich smut at this point. Chase couldn’t have sex before this(except his first time with Josh that he doesn’t remember) and now that he feels attraction toward Josh and finally had sex after a long time he is living it out. Don’t worry it won’t be full on smut for long but do be prepared that there will be a lot of sex in the future as well but the story will progress just fine!
