consent can be withdrawn at any moment during sex, which dan has explicitly expressed in almost every single sex encounter they've had. contractual and coercive sex is still rape. there's a reason why prostitutions and sex work is illegal in some countries--because sex workers cannot fully consent when they are contractually required to do so.
"if dan didn't like what he saw then he should've left" is victim blaming. when dan is in the shower right before jk rapes him for the first time, he considers leaving but literally fears that jk would "beat [him] up even worse than the guy [jk] just kicked out". he even pushes jk away during sex and insists he can't do it. that's withdrawing consent.
there's a difference between depicting rape and glamorizing it, which is what mingwa is doing.
i don't understand how you can consider all the nuance in this conversation then turn around and conclude it ISN'T rape.
Bruh thank you, that's what i've been saying for ages too. Dan chose to be in a transactional relationship with JJK voluntarily, to save himself(and grandma) from a situation that JJk had nothing to do with. Yes, JJK does take it a bit farther when he lashes our violently but the sexual relationship itself is one that KD chooses and he can back out any time.
I do like your take on how public forums like this should be -- that it should be a place of informative conversations in an ideal world. For now, it just surprises me that people continue to return to this page just to complain.
dan HAS attempted to back out in every sexual encounter they had and yet jk forcibly continued. rape is more than a physical power imbalance--there's a financial, status power imbalance between them too. dan had no choice but to accept jk's proposal, regardless of jk's involvement in dan's prior situation. that's still coercion. hell, even when dan DID back out by resigning and moving somewhere else, jk brought him back and forced him to sleep in the same bed he raped him in (i'm ignoring dan's grandma's request for jk to bring dan back to seoul bc she isn't aware of what happened to him). "a bit farther" is an extreme understatement
This would be much more believable if you weren't literally in the page's comments.
But my two cents on the consent part is that you and some of the other responders are correct, consent can be withdrawn at any point. Which is why I've always said that JJK regularly goes too far, both in bed and in their professional life when he turns verbally abusive. Even transactional relationships should hold minimum respect for one another.
But the reason why I play Devil's advocate is because of the nuances. KD did not have to continue this relationship with JJK, but does so because he needs to. And the reason why he needs to is by no fault of JJK(unlike in Waterside night). Essentially, KD is choosing this relationship because even with JJK's aggressive behavior in bed, it is still the lesser evil. His other choices are to be at the mercy of those loan sharks, or get no help at all, which is the tough choice i think people in reality do have to make.
In summary, ill say this, it's not rape through and through, although there are strong elements of it. What people overlook is Kim Dan's agency in the whole matter -- he was stuck between a hard place and a rock and chose the option that guaranteed him and his grandmother more security. This is a type of choice that a lot of people in reality have to make, when they need to make a living and its not in a way they want. But what season 2 really reinforces is that Kim Dan could have left. He moved his grandmother to a smaller hospital, where she had cleaner air and more social opportunities, albeit less advanced facilities, and she's thriving.
you can't say "it's not rape through and through" then follow it up with "though there are strong elements of it". dubious consent does not exist in real life. it's either consensual or rape. just because jk wasn't directly involved in the cause of dan's circumstance doesn't mean he didn't exploit it to make sure he stayed. and jk DID play a part in coercing dan into the contract through fear--something i've already stated before. he was scared jk would harm him if he backed out.
midway through season one, jk already gotten rid of the loan sharks. the greater evil at that point was not the loan sharks, but jk himself. both the greater and lesser evil were committed by jk, just in different forms. at the start, yes, the loan sharks were a factor in dan's decision to partake in the contract, but after jk got rid of them, dan chose to not leave bc he fell in love with jk, which was honestly and simply the result of bad writing.
you're conflating lack of agency with consent. dan didn't "choose" to have sex with jk, he was cornered into it.

This is not rape. Rape doesn’t ask questions rape sees, and it takes. I literally had to go back to chapter 1,2 and three just to make sure I got it right and all those people JK had in his bed, he either paid or ask for them to get in bed with him. Yes I will note that Dan did not want to accept his proposal. But from the jump him eavesdropping behind the door should never have happened if he did not like what he saw he should’ve left but he didn’t he entered the house then JK explained his situation and he gave Dan a proposal. Dan did not want to take that proposal, but he had to take care of his debt and I think his grandma so he needed the money and he accepted, and that’s why you have to stand behind your morals if he did not want to be there, he wouldn’t have been there.
Now I will say rape is not something that should be normalized, I shouldn’t be reading something with rape in it and not feel slightly disturbed. I’m supposed to feel weird but we shouldn’t make it a taboo subject. Things that we make taboo lead to those things happening in secret like when America ban alcohol people still drunk alcohol and that lead to more people being alcoholics.
Rape is something that CAN be written about. In a perfect world Rape shouldn’t be written about because it wouldn’t exist, but it does exist so we have to talk about it. So when an author chooses to write a story with rape in it. You have to take it with a grain of salt.
Personally, I don’t know this author and maybe he or she is the worst person on earth, and I do not know the reason behind them writing this story but what I do know is that them writing the story is like throwing a rock into a lake. Do you think a kid at 14 (though I do think it’s that’s a bit young to be reading certain types of manga) in a world that thinks rape is a taboo subject understands the effects rape has on the other person like I said rape sees, and it takes. (I chose that age because that’s around the age that you start thinking about who you are. Rape is not something that pops up out of nowhere it’s something that you nurture and allowed to fester into something big and disgusting.)
Your job as a reader is to be in the comments, not bashing the author, but telling people rape is not normal and it is not right. There are many fish in the sea and if you see someone you like and they do not like you back no is no or saying consent is hot. It’s your job to change the narrative. A story is still a story at the end of the day. It’s what you make of it that matters and stop bashing people for reading stories. If you cannot read it, my love do not read the story it’s OK to find something else.
