I think he wanted to stay and go at the same time, so he spend his life with Mikhail, who later, when Mio died searched for a younger version of him in Mio’s past and send that Mio after Ash. So he got the bes of both world. He didn’t abaddoned the case what he and Ash fighted for, yet, he got his happy ending at the same. So that’s why Mikhail said Mio was handful, because it would have been easier to send him back while he was allive. At least that's what I'm telling myself so I don't feel sad
