In my mind: I think it was also that Sugiki didn’t know if what he was feeling was love or obsession/admiration. When it was saying about how Sugiki wasn’t “seeing Suzuki” it was basically saying that he loved his dancing, but wasn’t looking at Suzuki as a whole and when he actually started to, he realized that he didn’t know what he actually wanted.
