If my memory serves me right, they projected an illusion that Dowon died in a training so that they think it will help him gain his memory back. That's probably why it's haunting him thinkin it was real. He's probably confused or something..

I read most of the novel (didn’t finish the side stories because I was busy with finals). If I remember correctly the novel explains way before this point that: Yes, there was a past event at Gamcheon Harbor. No, Kwonwoo and his loved ones were not involved. However, he watched his instructor who was close to him die during a monster attack (this event also triggered him into awakening as an s class instead of whatever rank he was before); when they were trying to bring Kwonwoo’s memories back they used that event and replaced his instructor with Dowon to trigger him into using his powers. In order to use his powers, Kwonwoo hallucinates either memories of past traumatic events or Dowon/his already deceased loved ones dying. Idr if he saw his parents die or what but he’s just very deeply traumatized and the method that was used to trigger him into using his powers and recover his memory only traumatized him more and made him very insecure over Dowon’s safety. But p sure he was already concerned with that before the memory loss.
Kwonwoo lost his memory when a building collapsed on him and his team. During that event he hallucinated(?) Dowon calling out to him. Idk if they ever explained why in the side stories or if that’s just an implied indication of how much Kwonwoo already cared for and feared for the safety of Dowon before the memory loss.
The adaptation is following the novel very closely but I think some of this important explanation gets lost when there’s less text + chapters released weekly so we all forget stuff that wasn’t emphasized as much as it was in the text because of the medium change.

The illusion he had, that he failed to save anyone, is it flashback or another illusion?
The one he keep hearing Dowon asking for help, the image that Dowoon getting killed, is that another illusion or did something really did happened before?
i still dont understand what made him lost his memory.
Does all the nightmares/illusion he had about Dowoon is projected because he failed to save the one he loved before? Is that why he tries to push Dowon away?
