The answer is a bit more complicated. Both characters are in love with each other, but both believe the other doesn't love them, so the result is a very messed up sex, where one forced the other, while the other refusing because they both believe the other hates them. While it is very uncomfortable to read this part of the story, you just need to keep in mind that it is the result of years of misunderstanding. The story will eventually reveal how it all accumulated to that, and after that the story gets a lot better and interesting. Definitely worth the read, especially if you like story with a lot of yearning and angst.
