The moment a story has any plot and not just cute and fluff it’s toxic and terrible. The moment you have to think about the actions of characters more deeply it’s “bad.” It’s realistic that Juhyeok's inferiority complex effects him so deeply and that Suah’s love clouds his judgement so much that both of them go about their actions in ways that are detrimental to each other and themselves. Even real life is not so black and white for gods sake, sorry some of you don’t have the ability to enjoy things beyond lighthearted works, but it’s boring that that’s the only thing you feel like people should enjoy. Some of us want a drama and plot beyond a basic meet cute and happily ever after

I won't lie, I used to be the type to always attack works that had rape. Maybe I just gave up..? But I would like to think that it at least allows me to read more into the characters and the complexities going on. Generally, as someone who also writes, I think I always did? But most of the time it just still felt too fetishy for me.

This one is definitely not helping itself with the non-con themes, thoughhhh it does seem self aware? It's also not the worst by far... But also I am at the point now where I just am too desensitised I suppose, and read anyways.

There's (usually) always something to take away from most works despite the more- Unsavoury concepts portrayed...

Like for this one, I actually really feel for the MC as a transgender guy. This is basically secondary gender dysphoria- though I am sure it will go more in the direction of "accepting" his circumstance. The dread depicted is very real though. Sadge.

ur 2nd paragraph is my issue w most stories that depict rape / assault, or anything heavy in general.
9/10 times it's there for kink / fetish purposes (or are authors struggling with depicting consent??) & not to actually serve a narrative purpose. even if this character calls it as it is (rape), it's still not treated srsly.

this is the second story i've read this year where the MC acknowledges they've been raped by the ML, yet it's treated as a throwaway line

like yeah, we can read more complex romance, but it's silly to act as if most of the works showing darker stuff are delving deeper into the characters' actions & thoughts; how many of the featured manga on the front page are doing that

You can definitely say this again. So weird how this site is just filled children who always wants everything to be rainbows and kisses. There's absolutely no problem with complexity and using certain elements as plot device because at the end of the day it's goddamn fiction. This site has become so much more insufferable nowadays. Just a bunch of babies who want fluff and can't read deeper into anything else.

Kink and fetish things…although that doesn’t seem to be the case for this story does that matter? Those works are intended for adult audiences who are able tell right from wrong. The main issue with non consensual/dubious consent works is minors going out of their way to read mature work. I understand not wanting to read noncon/dubcon as an adult as well and I do think that more works should have warnings about that but I don’t think the average person(much less adult) is looking to romance comics for guidance on an accurate depiction of a healthy relationship

Exactly this. It’s very common for these darker themes to be drawn just as regular porn rather than dealt with in a grim and more honest manner.

There definitely are works out there that I have read which actually use rape as a traumatic and gut wrenching subject, and those stories are very impactful and heartbreaking, but for me, immensely respected as well done for how they touch on heavy subjects without fetishizing it. Usually these are in novels though.

For example, in the trilogy A Land Fit for Heroes, there’s a character named Ringil who was not only sexually abused as a young boy by an adult, then also assaulted by classmates when they found out he may be queer, but also witnessed his first lover (the same age as him at the time) be publicly executed because of their homosexuality. He ended up killing a kid younger than himself that threw a rock at his slowly dying partner’s body in a fit of manic rage.

His entire character is a fucking tragedy, and by no means is he perfect, but by god the way the entire story goes about fucked up subjects, being a Grimdark trilogy, hits me right in the gut.

I wish works on here treated rape in the same light, as an SA victim myself. Like- I am not totally against ppl consuming dub/non-con as informed adults, but I really think it’s… a bit too common for comfort :/
