I’m curious if I’ve misunderstood something… you said, “most of the time she’s drawn in Chibi style”. To me, this sounds like you’re suggesting there was a time in which she wasn’t drawn in Chibi style. I’ve never seen her drawn in any other form. Do you happen to remember which chapter, or even which half of the series this occurred in?
I also don’t believe she’s drawn well for her age. In fact it’s so far from accurate that it detracts from the story. When considering that she was nearly 8 months old when the elderly dad left for the US, then she should be closer to 9 months by now. She’s at the age where she should be starting to walk.
In a story about parenting, (where being a parent is half of the plot) the accuracy of the parenting, and the age of the baby, is directly relevant to the quality of the story. Also, since the author is clearly providing a measurable timeline (whether intentional or not) then the author needs to take accountability for this. An author has an obligation to their readers to write the story in a way that doesn’t detract from the reader’s immersion in the story. This is about the author’s skills as a writer. Shrugging off “poorly made writing choices” as unimportant, would mean the author is lowering the quality of their work while expecting the readers to compensate for that by “overlooking it”.

What does he mean, “She’s grown so much?” Is that a joke? This child hasn’t grown since the series began. Heck her hands are still so tiny, they’re smaller than Mr. Kwan’s fingernails. She’s practically deformed. Not to mention this kid is supposed to be at least 8 months old at this point:
- In chapter 1 we learn that the baby girl is 3 months old.
- Soon after moving in, the mc begins plowing an overgrown field filled with trash.
- Later in the series the baby girl grows her first tooth (ends up in the ER for bleeding gums and a fever) (babies get their first tooth between the ages 4 to 7 months)
- A few chapters later, our mc harvests scallions and lettuce from the field he plowed before (scallions take 50 to 60 days to grow from seed)
- Afterwards a harvest festival is held. It’s probably Hansik, which occurs in April. Chapter 50 occurs soon after. We find out from the ML that chapter 50 is right after the harvest festival. The ML questions if it’s normal for rain to fall that much in early summer. (No idea why the translator chose the Roman holiday Saturnalia as the festival’s name. That’s the December holiday for worshiping Saturn the Roman god of harvest [Saturn= Zeus’s father Kronos in Greek].)
- Since winter hasn’t happened in this series yet, we can assume ch 1 occurs in early spring. How did I arrive at that? We first determine how much time our mc has spent in that town since his arrival. It took 60+ days to grow the scallions, including the extra time needed to clean up trash/weed/till the field. Just subtract that amount of time from the date of the harvest festival. If the harvest festival was Hansik (which occurs in April), then 60+ days prior would leave us in early February.
- ML’s dad appears over many chapters following ch 50. Ch 50 takes place in early summer (As stated by the characters. Summer starts in June.)
The baby should therefore be close to 8 months old when the dad went back to the US.
