TBH, I actually liked Marquis as a 2nd ml, but he was too righteous, which made me lose my hopes for him.

Yeah... The one who loved fake Yvonne the most was the marquis, then one who killed and the selfishly reversed Penelope's time unendingly was also him. Causing the original Penelope's repeated death (she had a complete soul back then) but the soul completely shattered unable to reincarnate as whole anymore. Only a tiny piece of it managed to reincarnate that is current Penelope from the modern world.

While I do like marquis, but just imagining Original Penelope's repeated death is just sad, Marquis was the one who did that without consideration for Penelope's will. Being brought back to life and repeatedly killed only to save the people who killed her/hurt her/neglected her is just tragic.

This was mentioned in a previous chapter when Penelope found the artifact with Callisto

    this is in the novel
it was really tragic, OG Penny was already problematic due to the abuse from the house, then came fake Yvonne, she instinctively know that she's bad (due to her mage bloodline) so her actions became more unhinged which fake Yvonne took advantage of so it's easy to make OG Penny the villainess
this happened, like, thousands (?) of times to the point that her soul shattered, the last tiny fragment got reborn into our world, probably trying to escape the nonstop destruction

The novel explained... It seems that the tiny fragment or Penelope's soul reincarnated, but it wasn't really aware of the previous life (Penelope's life), since it was already an independent soul of it's own right. But much like the Marquis, ancient wizards/system were unsympathetic towards what happened to Penelope, after searching for even a trace of the broken soul, it found the reincarnated fragment. it decided to drag the weak independent soul just because it was once a fragment of Penelope's soul.
So yeah, OG Penelope was really a tragic character. She was abused, killed, then forced back to life (for the sake of the world/people that abandoned her) then finally, her soul disappeared leaving only a small fragment, but even that fragment was forcedly dragged back unaware.
