It honestly isn't unusual. Young brains are, well, stupid. Throw in the conservative culture and fear of his family and religion and you end up with a toxic mix of self hatred and desire. This behavior occurs even today but someone in a position of power who wouldn't have anyone to stand in their way? Basically a kid who used to rip the wings off butterflies but grown up without ever being told it's wrong.
If the prince really does like Ennid then he is going about it the wrong way. Does he really expect that he will like him after all he has done to him?
