I think that’s why the author highlighted that had he become close and helped Ennid, it would’ve ended up in an exploitative relationship as varabus still would’ve had to use ennid’s abilities to claim his spot at the palace… the author made us understand that not everything is black and white, there isn’t really an alternative reality where they just become friends and everything’s good, just like in this reality it isn’t just that varabus is this evil ennemy that’s simply cruel by nature.
