I think they’re just giving a rationalization as to the motives or at least some understandings of the characters thought processs. that’s just one of the many normal human reactions to having lost or actively losing a loved one. Just like how you both have two polarized opinions both have their own validities because there is no one proper way to react. People are complex and that’s what it means to be human. If all the characters acted the same way then there would be nothing to drive any stories plot forward and things would become quite boring. Even then if they still both come to the same conclusions they still wouldn’t act it out or react the same. Also have you ever thought that maybe its purposeful that both characters have their own forms of obsession and attachment both are unhealthy both are inherently selfish and both believe they’re acting completely in the best interests of their person. They are more similar than they think but both have othered themselves into feeling that another way of thinking or resolving the situation isn’t an valid option and that their own conclusion is the only option or right way.
