The same cliche as ever. Seme has a turn of 180 grades on his personality and realize he is inloved, regrets, blah,blah and uke pity him and accepts him. The innovation here? a WHOLE chapter more of the uke rejecting him, WOW.
To be fair Kou didn't make a 180-degree turn. He has always been a flirty guy who never knew love nor was serious about it, but in the manga there are indications that he truly cares for Shinobu. When Kou encouraged Shinobu to be more confident about himself, I believe that was sincere. And even when Kou abandoned Shinobu and took another guy to his apartment, he was looking at out the window at Shinobu with a troubled face.
Both the cruel Kou and the ignorant about true love Kou are still him.
Is it cliche? Yes, it is. There are motifs even in the most creative works you can find nowadays. The important thing is the execution of the story and characters in a way that people can enjoy. I think the part of the story that attracts readers the most is that the uke was able to stand up for himself and was not clingy when he knew the seme had been playing him all along. As for the "innovation" that you mentioned sarcastically, people should be given a second chance when they are truly regretful and are willing to redeem for their mistakes - or at least that's what I believe.
You have the right of believe, but RL is different from this kind of stories. People dont change so drastically. How this man is dispicted indicate that he has liltle or unexistent empathy, he knows what he is doing and how anothers feel but he doesnt care. Redeem is a christian concept that can fit very well in fiction but not n RL. Its my POV and for me is hard to get into a story that can be credible. Im not an expert but this kind of story is very shojo-like, isnt it?
The way I see it, Kou is not someone incapable of empathizing with others. He seems to have understood Shinobu's love trouble and his lack of confidence issue and given him advice. I have a feeling he just acts narcissistic and treats others like toys because he's a guy who has had it all since birth : intelligence as well as appearance, so success and lovers come to him easily. He doesn't have to work hard to gain anything, and others flock to him because of his superficial appearance anyway so he doesn't know how to love and treasure what he has. More than a change of personality, I think his breakup with Shinobu leads to a development of his character.
By redeeming I don't mean it in a Christian way (I know shit about religion haha) I mean making up for your past mistakes by changing your actions/attitude and doing well-meaning things to people you've hurt.
As for the story being shoujo-like, I'm sorry I don't really understand what you mean by that. Or you mean it's too romantic to be true? Lots of yaoi fall into the romance category though...
About shoujo-like (sorry Im not a native english speaker, my english is awful ik) I meant that follow the stereotypes that Ive always seen in animes and mangas where the inocent and pure girl who is all smiles is cheated by the arrogant, manly and succesful man and at the end her love would health his tortured soul and make him into a puppy. That he had everything he desires as justification to be and asshole is itself a classic stereotype in romance literature. Then he would redeem saying sorry and everybody happy but in RL is highly likely he end up falling in his old habits, its psicologically more complex than in this kind idiolized romance. And you say it yourself he "understand" Shinobu's feelings but that he can empathyze them is another story. But well this is fiction so is fine, but I must say it would be refreshing seing this cliches stories take some surprising paths once in a while.
