Yea, I admit that Hiroya irritated me quite a lot too. But to play Devil's advocate here. You also have to take into account it was from the 90s and a different culture too. Tough I completely admit he was pretty spineless I also took into account he was raised by family that repressed him in general a lot of his life by the way he talks, hes the only boy in his family and things like this would also make him reject falling for a guy all the more. Plus Takashi did lie to him in the beginning too. He was a jerk a lot too, he bullied Hiroya, lied to him, and rejected being in love with him in the beginning too.
LOL so to me they were both idiots that were teenagers trying to come to terms with a hard truth and grow up at the same time. Since there are people in real life that reject their sexuality until they are adults I was a little more sympathetic, even while i was irritated XD.
OK! I just love discussions sometimes so pardon me going on like that :P
I found this manga very interesting because it touches so many important topics like the concept of bisexuality, open relationships, aids and it shows the struggle of accepting one's own sexual orientation. But it's so typical of a manga from the 90's to have such meddlesome characters. One thing is that I don't like Hiroya too much. I know he was struggling to come to terms with his sexuality but before he accepted it he would always think horrible things about Takashi, blame everything on him and call him names. I don't like his thinking process. I'm pretty sure he had a crush on Takashi from the very beginning even when he says he just admired him and just wanted to be "friends". And the classmate who kept trying to interfere "for Hiroya's own good" like gtfo. If you really want him to be happy just leave him alone. And Hiroya should've just told him directly that he didn't need his help, but he just tried to escape and got amnesia, how surprising.
