Well, it was more because he had to face his own reality instead of delude himself. When he realized what he wanted and he put his feelings in order, that was when he changed, Xu Shang helped him doing a push, but himself and Ah Ao are the ones who truly make it.
But well, I have liked Ah Xun since the beginning, to me he's my fav since I find him the most interesting character, and I want to know more about his mom. But well, him being friends with Shang is lovely, I love them together (as friends, of course) ヾ(❀╹◡╹)ﾉ~
The uke friendship
Just my opinion tho. I noticed that Ah Xun in latest chapters looks more calm, gentle and reserved? Not the usual edgy face that he used to had in earlier chapters. He's changed for the better and I think a big part of it is all thanks to Xu Shang's push way back in earlier chapters cs that was the trigger for Ah Xun to change.
