Though I wouldn't deny ripping out an earring is painful and would bleed a lot, I don't think it would be worthy of a trip to the hospital. It would definitely require cleanup, though.

Maybe it's a clip-on or something? Or just had a shitty clasp that broke instead of tearing? You're totally right that it needed follow-up.
