I've noticed in a lot of Japanese mangas, the characters will act like turning 30 or being over 30 means you are old so it must be a fairly common way of thinking in Japanese society. I agree it's absolutely ridiculous.
The best part is that usually Asian people start aging really late and they usually live longer than us
