for child it must have been big shock to see his mother die then his friend get hurt and go into coma , all that is hard to endure even as adult so image a child going through that , it's understandable that he feel responsible
You gotta stop beating yourself up over that...he was gratefully happy that he didn't have to be alone anymore and he'll be overwhelming joyful to know that you stayed with him the whole time in the hospital. You have served your time you did a good thing. You didn't leave him in the snow....no matter what we (the readers) say we forgive you and understand you gotta believe it for yourself
