Oppa is used by females to address an older male.
it's used towards family and also boyfriends, and just other older males in general that may be friends / you are close with.
When he saw Mari's "Oppa" he assumed it was her boyfriend that she was talking about but he's actually her real brother. Since Oppa is used for so many different things it can cause confusion haha.
