I agree. I think her focusing so much on chika is the reason why he becomes a red herring. I think she should have focus more on the masato more so make the ship more apparent.

Take a peek at the epilogue and see who ends up with who before you start reading and it becomes less stressful of a read. If I went in not knowing who the endgame couple was I'd be so irritated from the whiplash and so mad for poor Chika

The author shouldn't have spent so much time focusing on Chika and should have fixed the pacing just a bit (less time with the Chika relationship and more time developing Masato and just explaining everyone's emotions and motivations better), then the ending would have felt more well-rounded
