Oppa a word that means older brother, but it's also basically a cute nickname for your boyfriend.
Mari had her brother under "oppa." and her boyfriend under "Oppa <3" so her friend thinks her brother is actually her boyfriend.
Her friend doesn't wanna tell Mari because he doesnt wanna betray her and her brother can't say anything because no one knows he's gay.

What a messed up society, where it's seen as better to pretend that your sister is your girlfriend than be open about being gay!

He doesn't want to be honest though. To the extent where despite their being no evidence of a wife and mistress Junyoung thinks he is married and having an affair with his friend. Why can't hasn't the sister spoke about her brother in conversation and introduced him as that, rather than constantly calling him Oppa which Junyoung in his silly mind thinks must mean boyfriend and nothing else. All of this lack of transparency because Dr is too scared to be honest with himself.

Many countries use affectionate terms for family members and partners that are the same such as "love'. However, Mari not mentioning anything about her "brother" to her friend created this ambiguity and Junyoung just is jumping to conclusions despite their being no evidence, and also you know asking Siwon about his family and the wife he thinks he has.

it's both affectionate term AND title sorta, oppa = could mean both blood-related brother and non-related brother. i know because our language also has an equivalent word for oppa. that's why i'm saying it's some kind of a loophole in the korean language. it's not just a specific confusion (to this webtoon) but is a common one.

Yes, but even with the ambiguity in language there are generally other signals be it in real life or when reading a webtoon that make the differentiation between sibling/spouse/friend etc obvious. Maybe in later chapters though the situation will become clearer rather than dragging on something that should have been clarified by chapter 1 and really adds little to the plot other.

I guess the problem could've been quickly solved if Shihoon introduced Junyoung as his boyfriend to his family. But the whole "oppa" situation is completely Junyoung's own fault. Shihoon has been nothing but honest with Junyoung. It is Junyoung himself who has been vague and quiet about the whole situation. I also don't think it's that strange that Mari has never introduced Shihoon before. He seems to be a workaholic and probably only sees his sister at their parent's home once in a blue moon, so there's really no chances for Junyoung to have ever seen him. Mari also seems to like talking about her boyfriends and relationships most, so I'm not even surprised she never speaks about him. Also, what other word should she have used for Shihoon? Oppa literally means older brother.
