I agree with you. Its not like its not interesting to read about a person like him because people like him do exist, but people on here are going crazy for him despite the fact that if he acted like this irl people would find him disgusting and would have absolutely nothing to do with him. If they actually met a person like this, or a person like this came a fucked their husband or kid, they would not appreciate his "complexity" or rationalize his actions as a result of his past. The author's whole point is supposed to be that Rogi sucks. He's childish, selfish, and self loathing. He lies to himself and desperately chases after false "ideals" in order to not deal with his own personal issues and self loathing. He will hurt anybody in these pursuits and doesn't really care. He IS a bad person. An interesting character, but he sucks...because he's supposed to. He's not supposed to be redeemed through his past. Its an explanation, not a reason. His reasons lie within himself- his narcissism, his self loathing, his desperation for outside approval to validate himself, his selfishness, etc. He does this horrible shit not because he had a hard life, but because he chose to keep running and hurting others. There is no excuse. He made his choices and readers should be able to understand him and still hate him.
1) Of course no one wants to deal with someone like this in real life. That's why people read books/watch movies. Do you want to join the yakuza? Of course not. But nobody makes these complaints about the myriad yakuza stories.
2) That is NOT the whole point of the story. The point of the story is that every person has worth. You and readers like you prove the need for stories like this. I suppose it's hopeful that you're reading at all. I hope you'll check in at the end and let us know if your feelings have changed. If you are honest enough to do so.
You need to get off your high horse. I love reading stories about human nature and especially about flawed individuals and stories that dig into the inherent negativity and depravity we all have somewhere within us as human beings. But I'm not like 14 anymore and have experienced the real world and know that no, not every person does have worth. Some people's bad outweighs their good. Some people are out there raping and murdering kids, what worth do they have in society? A lot of them are wealthy CEOs, pretty sure the economy and world would keep turning without them. I could talk to you all damn day about well written flawed characters. Unfortunately, my biggest turn off is being depraved enough to rape somebody whose damn diaper you've changed. Sorry that it makes me think about pedophila and makes me really upset...? Of course I'll probably be more into Rogi by the end once the author has pulled some strings and made me feel bad for him again. I don't have to think Rogi is a good person to enjoy this story or stories about people with hard lives and difficult decisions. But having a hard life doesn't give you an excuse to put more bad into the world. A lot of people go through hard times, suffer, and are abused and don't choose to go inflict that pain onto other people. Rogi is a slave to his whims and desires, especially in the phase of his life we're seeing in these flashbacks. He completely let go of his moral compass to try to chase any form of happiness. He's willing to do whatever he can in order to try to grasp at some form of validation from another person despite us all knowing it comes from within.(Akitora was "nice" to him--in his mind. In actuality he doesn't really give a shit about Rogi more than he does any other person or plaything he has ever had.) Too bad he doesn't realize that will never make him happy and that he could've gotten what he wanted much faster/easier if he'd just chosen to try to better himself and be healthy and happy in a way that doesn't have to drag others down. Anyway, there are tons of stories about people being major fuck ups that don't go so far as to rape their "lovers" kid. Idk go try A Separate Peace or something, stop reading so much manga that it minimizes your view on rape :/
Um please stop saying he could have chosen a different life, that is like saying he chose to be raped by Akitora. All the other points I 100% agree with, though.
Same with Akitora, then and all the rest of the characters. No characters were happy because of the happy life they had, eithet. They only chose it. Their happy life previously is irrelevant.

Probably an unpopular opinion, but I'll never like Rogi. He's just an utter shit human being. Total garbage through and through. Even after everything, he still rapes their kid. Like fuck him forever, you can never redeem Rogi in my eyes and tbh I don't think you're even supposed to like him. But really, I can't get over that he raped their kid. I really can't. If he hadn't done that I could get over him but its too far and I think the author is minimizing it too much.
