Maybe scars are considered ugly back then
In alot of cultures, people who had scars (especially in areas where you could see) were considered "impure". If a woman tried to hide her scars during courtship and the man found out, it was grounds for immediate annulment or divorce. So this isnt a stretch to be honest.
