It's not like it would be particularly daring as much more taboo was Saezuru Tori wa Habatakanai, one of the characters said that he used seeing his friend crying at his dad's funeral as wanking material so I doubt people would be particularly shocked by Chinese guy's speculated kink.

In the context, the whole thing is quite sad, but at least the author does a better job of explaining the characters motives and feelings rather than a this point just slotting in some s/m material that has no real point.
