Madarame Hiro is so good at writing loneliness and despair. You can really feel her characters breaking and shattering with every panel. Even after all this time, my heart still aches for Misato. He was lured in by his ex-boyfriend, fell in love, and then brutally dumped after being told he was only a substitute. Then after falling in love with Mei, he learns that he's only been treated well because he's, once again, a substitute for Satoshi. Sure he was wrong for lying to Mei and using him, but he realized he was wrong and was going to try and fix it. His loneliness is the most heartbreaking to me, because he's alone even when his "lover" is with him. I know the ending suggests they'll eventually be happy, but Misato will never be the same ever again. His heart will always remember that no one wanted him. They just wanted a placeholder.

I think they will be able together because in one chapter, when we can read Mei thoughts, we can see that he started to love Misato and he said that his love for Sato (the twin boy) had died. But as he felt guilty for Sato-girl death he thinks he has not right to be happy. That's why he thinks that having a one-sided love for Misato is his punishment for his sin. He still doesn't know that Misato has started to truly love him. That's what I believe and it makes my heart lighter...
