In the case of the uke, I think his insecurity doesn't just come from being in a committed relationship for the first time, but also a lot from his apprehension that the seme, a straight guy, will get scared away by the judgment if others (from public displays of affection for ex) and go back to women.

I agree. I remember this statement very well so I decide to reply to it.
You gotta understand that it real life, love or in misaki case, happiness is not that easy. I mean misaki fell in love with his coach, which got married before he could even tell him anyway, which got him in denial of being gay which he hide for how many years. Then his ex, comes in and not only just touches him and ask “misaki, you like guys don’t you?” Which misaki acted on his own to make out with him, believing that his ex loved him back. But only to find out that not only was his ex cheating on him with a women which he didn’t even know that he likes girls, but he was getting married. So after that he felt because of who he was, being gay, he felt that there’s was no happiness for someone like him. So because of a bad breakup he pulls away completely, and vows to never fall in love again because he is afraid of getting hurt. Which is an understandable reason. Basically the hedgehog Dilemma. Now he because of his drunken actions to a certain someone, his secret and weakness is out and is being used against him because of his bad character. Now he trying to destroy the evidence and back on track only to just come to agreement on how their weakness should be handle. He comes to fall in love with man who is straight and fears of being rejected again. When be because of a action he does to mikado, and try’s to go back to mikado house again but doesn’t answer his calls, he fears and thinks it’s all over because he isn’t normal or because he is gay. However mikado, not only loves him back, but tells him about his problem on not finding happiness, he breaks down and confesses to him, not knowing his feelings. When mikado tries to show his affection, misaki holds backs because of what happen with his ex who thinks that his ex only dated him out of pity, the way they broke up. But mikado tells him that it’s not out of pity. So when they make love for the first time, misaki not only gets his love returned but finds happiness for the first time.
Now on to the sequel. Misaki is happy right now being in a relationship with mikado, however because mikado wants to do things that lovers do, he doesn’t know how to handle something like that. Now they do argue about however misaki does agree and goes with him on a date where many people would just refuse regardless of how the other person feels. So he is trying. Even though he does pull away, because how people would see their relationship, and is scare what would happen next because of what happen last time. Now we don’t know what mikado ex or if he even dated girls lot be honest as misaki ask him about the movies and mikado say he went by himself. So there’s that.
Mikado isn’t prefect either, as we see through the first volume of the story. Now in the sequel he is indeed trying to make things work. He realize misaki pulling away and feelings like the movie wasn’t even a date to him. So he try’s again. This time with a trip. But he messes up by not picking the right route for the trip. Now Again, misaki could easily just said his complaints and went back home cause it seems he didn’t want to be in the trip during golden week. But instead he helps them get on track so they can make it on time, which brings a smile to mikado. So misaki is trying. MIkado seems he figured out the problem as he picks the mountain because no one really goes there. So they can be themselves there. But even if they didn’t make it, mikado was happy with simply holding his lover hand.
Anyway my point to this both are perfectly flawed characters. They make mistakes, they both argue. They both have issues and problem. Love isn’t easy, and neither is happiness. Sorry for the long reply.
When in committal relationships, happiness is not just "wishing it lasts", its work hard together to make it last. I understand the is the uke's first committal relationship, but seme is trying to make them more into an actual couple and instead of helping and working on his insecurities, he chose to pull away, doing that your happiness wont last as much as you want ;_; not saying that its easy to overcome insecurities, but at least recognize the effort of the seme instead of deciding his feelings for him :c Communication is key, kids!
