I think the point is you decide if they are a couple or not at the end (they are though, this is BL, we know what's up). It's very typical meta-literature.

Meh, this confusing non-linear snippets in time storytelling isn't really working for me. I'm confused on whether or not they are a couple. Are they? I really can't tell. Also it feels like the "story" is just random moments in their life which would be fine if I knew who these characters were and could just sit back and see different points in time but as is I have no idea who these characters are. It almost feels like this is a sequel to a much more cohesive story.
