I think that Gowther changed everyones memory of Mael because he’s the strongest from the godessclan. I mean, from the demon clan the strongest was meliodas, but since he defected both clans were at a standstill. The goddess clan had the ability to seal the demon clan but at a great expense and since strategically they seemd to have the upper hand the war would countinue. I think that gowther killed mael in everyone's memory and created estarossa to push the goddess clan to use their ultimate weapon and seal the demon clan, exhausting their power and ending the war.

Basically Mael and Gowther worked tgt to change everyone's memories of Mael to Estarossa. And now doubt's arosen tada answers are voila
