i was a bit confused around the time Masumi started being more violent. It seemed that in the beginning it was pretty light BDSM and Masumi seemed to be a bit uncomfortable with some of it, but then all of a sudden his abuse escalates and I got confused.
I think i more or less get their feelings for eachother by the end, but the sudden shift in their relationship threw me off.

Lol, sorry for bumping a 2018 comment thread. But I'd just like to discuss what I understood from the story.
Masumi became increasingly abusive or violent for two reasons:
1) he doesn't understand what bdsm is.
From Masumi's pov, bdsm == abuse/violence. He continuously questions (internally) why Tobita likes to get hurt. But that's the point. Tobita doesn't like getting hurt, he likes being dominated.
2) he's frustrated with his relationship with Tobita
Masumi never got a confirmation that Tobita loves him. He believes that Tobita is only with him for bdsm, and Tobita could always find other partners someday. This reason branches off to two: Masumi becomes more violent to "satisfy" Tobita better (hell wrong); and his violence is a subconscious reaction from his frustration.
This is why it sparks their break up as initiated by Tobita. Tobita realizes this and decides that their relationship is fruitless since they have different views on love and sex.
I really didn't get this story to be honest...
