If you want an answer, its because when they were attacked by the mana-eater: they lost 1 or 2 of their horses. That's why Mira and Gno rode on a horse alone to get some help from the village while the other members were injured. I'm guessing they were waiting for more horses or a carriage while it was her birthday.

Why did she go back to the village for her birthday if she was already headed out to the academy with that magic dude and her friend?
