I think the author planned for more ahead, but had to call it off which explains the ending. This was very uncalled for. I don't think this was the original planned ending, but it was not a good way to end it. Open endings are interesting, but you don't build up a story, incite drama at the very last chapters and then end it with a 'you have to guess how it all ends'. It makes readers feel very dissatisfied. There are many ways open endings can work, but for it to work, the climax should never come when the story is reaching its ending.
