Yes, Zhi Shu died because of cancer. I think its Bone Marrow Cancer or Leukemia, I'm not sure.

Wen Xu also probably committed suicide, three or four years after Zhi Shu's death. Those years were atonement for his sins towards Zhi Shu.
I don't know if the same thing will happen here on the manhua version, since the story came originally from a novel. But, I would like the story to go with the novel version, even if Zhi Shu will have to die.
Because we'll get to see Wen Xu suffer for his sins.

I only the read a few translations of Wen Xu's letters to Zhi Shu after his death in the comments, but I'm only crying heaps. Its not because I sympathize with Wen Xu, rather, I realized how lonely Zhi Shu must've felt for the last 4 years of his life living with a man who practically didn't care about what him. There were so many things he wanted to do with Wen Xu. He wanted to raise a dog. He wanted to travel. He told him about his favorite show. He always waited for him for the past four years and he didn't leave Wen Xu even if he was already hurting. This reminded of how we take people for grantedーthe people we don't treat well because we think they'd forgive us all the time. Whether its a friend, family or lover, please treat them well from now on because we don't know much time we have left to be with them.
