May I? This is my favorite Kotobuki Tarako work so I've read this a few times over the years. Still haven't learned enough Japanese to read the original source, though.

The story plays with time being the 4th dimension of space. Let's expand on her straw example. Let's call one end of the plastic straw as Earth 1 and the other end as Earth 2. The body of the straw is time (or 'history'; one end is the beginning of time, the other is the present). If you insert the end of Earth 1 into Earth 2 and keep pressing inside, you can get anywhere in history of Earth 2. Pull it out and you're back to where you were. That's how the time disruptor machine works ('disrupt' because they're not time travelling within the same universe, but going to a specific point in time of a different universe).

One thing to note is that all the Jiu's seem to be MOSTLY unaffected by hopping to another world and can stay for a while. And that there's 4 Jiu's:
Short-haired Jiu (owner of the ball)
    Childhood friend Jiu
    Soldier Jiu
Pony-tail Jiu (the one talking at the end)

So, world hopping shenanigans (via multiple straws) happen and we get:

    Researcher!Tokiwo ends up with short-haired!Jiu
    Protagonist!Tokiwo ends up with Soldier!Jiu
    Housewife!Tokiwo ends up with Pony-tail!Jiu
Childhood Friend!Jiu Is Slowly Disappearing (because he got the short-end of the stick, apparently; let's just console ourselves that he spent some time with Housewife!Tokiwo).

The next parts are just my interpretation because that asshole Pony-tail!Jiu used a very general 'we'.

Pony-tail!Jiu and Childhood friend!Jiu swap worlds when they were 6 (same time short-haired!Jiu gives the ball to Protagonist!Tokiwo).
Pony-tail!Jiu and Childhood friend!Jiu gets back to their original worlds when they were 16 (when the multiverse corrects itself and sends Researcher!Tokiwo back to her world).
When the earthquake happened (18), Childhood friend!Jiu gets sent to Pony-tail!Jiu's world. Pony-tail!Jiu gets sent to the 'next world'. At this point, Protagonist!Tokiwo has met ALL the hopping Jiu's.
When Soldier!Jiu gets sent back to his world, Pony-tail!Jiu is thrown to Protagonist!Tokiwo's world (hence the comment from his wife that he abandoned her). Childhood friend!Jiu is thrown to the 'next world'.
After 8 years (it's not linear, remember they can travel at any point in time), Soldier!Jiu travels to Protagonist!Tokiwo's world, throwing Pony-tail!Jiu back to his world (it's why he was reminiscing it's been 8 years). Childhood friend!Jiu is still stuck in the 'next world' and is forever alone.
