Throwing out a wild theory: He's part of the curse of this "whatever-was-his-name-god" who's had two hearts in one body and got hacked in two - for either my eyes deceive me or "random middle aged homeroom teacher" got:
option A - magical rape bug, makes you about 20 years younger, but you can see ghosts and hear voices (downside, but well)
option B - met the other part of the curse (young, oh so attractive, "swoon"), together they can solve the puzzle, restore world peace and all that with mutual o-chin-chin-rubbing and "surprise? guess what's in your ass?"
