Idk. I think that reasoning is terribly flawed. Does that mean reading yaoi means we are still not allowed as readers to be critical of anything, ever? We just have to excuse everything as "it's yaoi, so it's not serious"? If I see a racist statement about myself, am I not allowed to say anything? I'm gay, I don't like reading heterosexual manga. So I read yaoi. Yaoi has its problematic areas. For sure. You have plenty of those focused just on porn. The separation is recognizing that what you are reading is fantasy. & is it wrong to simply point out, yikes, I don't want racism in my porn too? Real life is enough lol.

There are obviously young people reading this and making comments excusing away serious issues like rape, pedopholia, casual racism, fetishization-and it doesn't really seem like they are able to separate reality from fiction. We can read problematic material and STILL have the right to criticize aspects of it and want it to be better. There's SO much other manga, it's easy to just read/support those who aren't racist. And it's pretty telling that you had a problem with me simply commenting "yeah this is racist and I don't feel like reading it". That was just an observation, and it was nice to see some other people also recognize the casual racism.

No, that's just a misunderstanding. What was actually being discussed is blondie's character, but then a bunch of people started interpreting that as justifying pedophilia somehow. It's a strawman, then newcomers saw all these "can't believe people are justifying pedophilia" comments without reading back and realizing that that group of people were making things up. You can look back and read for yourself that no one is justifying blondie's predatory ways. I haven't really seen any talk about rape, so i'm not sure what to say about that.

And yes, you can justify it as fantasy too, but it squicks me out knowing that this is the Internet, and yes, there are real pedophiles out there who are likely reading these too.
Anyways-not looking to start a fight with anyone on here. Just wanted to comment my exasperation with yet another "Arabian theme story". Maybe the story will take a turn and not fall into cliched stereotypes, but I doubt it, from being disappointed before so many times ha.

I don't think you're getting what I'm saying here. What I mean is yaoi is a form of fetishization of gay people, so if you're so critical against fetishization shouldn't you be against the genre all together? Why is only race fetishization bad? I'm just curious.
Also, I would not say that stereotypes are racist. Problematic yes, but not racist. But I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree on that.

And I don't think you get what I was saying either? ALL porn is fetishization. Porn is porn. We can all agree when a straight person watches porn, they know it's a fantasy. As a gay person, yaoi IS that for me. Your thinking would be a different story for straight young teen girls who are fetishizing gay people but don't support gay rights or see gay people as gay people. Screw ignorance like that. A straight person can watch porn and be against elements of porn that they don't agree with and see as wrong -underage sex, racism, and there's no need to list any further.

And yes, we will just have to agree to disagree on that last one! The history and viewpoint of how POCs are viewed and treated in Japanese society and in their media don't make stereotypes so harmless. Stereotypes are all they attribute to certain races because their country is so homogenous, so it's the only representation they see and it all just contributes to a cycle of reinforcing racism.
This was going along ok, till the love interest showed up. Oh boy, "the Arabian theme" again, as someone below happily commented... Lol. I cringe whenever Japanese manga, particularly yaoi is the most guilty, incorporates any kind of POC characters. All their information seems to come from the most basic stereotypes from movies and TV. At the worst, it's flat out racism and weird fetishizations; at best, it's plain ignorance. Seen too many "Arabian themed" manga and it's laughable lol, so no hope for this. I'm out.
