When he almost but didn't kissed her it showed he was attracted to her, but then he felt guilty because he still loved his dead girlfriend. Their fight forced him to realize that his grief was holding him back from living. and he was hurting her too. The sakura flower earrings were a reminder & symbol of his love for his old girlfriend. By taking them off and entrusting them to the new girl, he was indicating he was going to try and move forward. He asked to wait til graduation while he did. It end with him saying he had dandelions (the new girl's flower) growing in his heart now. He had worked through his grief; he could love someone else now so her love and patience were rewarded.
