"There was a packet laying on my desk"

    caroline4323 February 19, 2019 7:40 pm

I thought it way possible to use sitting with thé meaning "waiting"

    Demon.Qu3en February 19, 2019 7:45 pm

Think of it literally. A packet can't be sitting since its an inanimate object, so you say "laying"

    caroline4323 February 19, 2019 7:48 pm

Yep.. I JUST thought I saw it somewhere used like that.. Thanks a lot.. you' ve been really helpful.... :)

On my opinion if you want to add "waiting" I'd say: there was a packet on my desk waiting for me

Actually even more correct would be: there was a packet waiting for me on my desk

Thanks.... I will probably just leave that out in the end.. I´ll just say: there was a packet on my desk... but thanks a lot anyway :)

It's a regional saying. I've heard some Americans say it. It's not necessarily wrong. Every country that speaks English as a whole has different sets of grammar rules, phonetics, and usage of words. So, you are not wrong. It's more of an American saying than a British saying. Like Americans say take out when buying food to go. British people say take away. Same thing just different usage of words.

Ho, ho, you made me really happy :) I thought I was going mental :D
Yes, there are many differences, at school you usually learn British English, but then you just pick up what you hear..
    Thanks a lot :))

Nah! You're not going mental. American English is unique in that most of the world do not speak American English. So, you usually don't hear it unless you watch a Hollywood movie or have met an American personally.

I think British English is also unique in its own way.. A lot of dialects and accents, sometimes barely understandable.. depending not only on the region but social class as well.. I remember watching something about British youths and... it was really something.. :). And sometimes, if I am not mistaken, even natives write things like "I could of done smth", can= t be only the poor foreigners because I see it so often...

Haha yeah it's definitely odd to use the word "packet" in that way but when she said "waiting"that's te only way I could infer it it would sound a lot better if it was "there was a package waiting for me" but we can't always get the grammar we want (⌒▽⌒)
