I think the author has thought so much about the story and know it so well that they sometimes forget the readers are reading this for the first time, and neglect to include critical information that connects the chapters smoothly. Overall, the story makes sense, but the flow is choppy because of the tendency for abrupt scene changes, emotional 180s, and characters being dropped into the story without introduction.
