...the author decided to switch up the plot (like adding in the cooking & political drama) to test the MC's decision making, morals, and determination.
It is the shadow world, so these quests could lead him forward to the end boss. Maybe its to test where his loyalty/judgement lies? Like he said, the homeless prejudice reminds him of the school. If it was any other rich, top rank student in his shoes, they'd have ignored the homeless girl. Or done something far worse.
If he was a snobby student, it would change the outcome of the political war.
(This is all an observation of course, I'm curious where the author is going with the plot)
